Saturday afternoon marked our 3rd annual Morris Addition neighborhood party on Strout Street, downtown Sebastopol. With invitations handed out to all residents of Strout, West, Pitt, Wilton, Snow and North High streets, we had about 50 attendees — about the same as last year’s party.

From all reports, everyone had a fine time. We closed off Strout Street and made hand-cranked caramel ice cream and blackberry sorbet, grilled, noshed, conversed, made chalk murals in the street, and — perhaps best of all — raced zucchini! A friend came with a variety of wheels, I set up a track using a couple of unused wood I-beams and sawhorses, and the kids set to work constructing cars. Not all of them made it down the tracks, much to the disappointment of the younger kids, but at least some did. We plan to round up more wheels and squash next year for even better races.

I started the parties the second year after we’d moved to the neighborhood as a way of getting to know our neighbors. Even if only a small number actually came, I met most of them in the process of handing out fliers. And those who came had a great time and wanted to do it again. So here we are looking forward to the 4th annual party — tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009.
