M is for Main Street

Main Street, Sebastopol (Phil Wilson)

S is for Sebastopol : a hometown alphabet book by Babetta Wilson ; illustrated by Philip Wilson.

We recently received a copy of this charming book  and I had the pleasure of cataloging it for the Sebastopol Regional Library’ collection. I cataloged the draft a couple of years ago when the author’s thesis came to the Sonoma State University Library. I’m happy to see the finished product and it was a lot of fun to look through the wonderful illustrations by the author’s son. While S is for Sebastopol is a picture book, Wilson also writes about various aspects of life in Sebastopol, ranging from Gravenstein apples to Patrick Amiot’s sculptures. I especially enjoyed “G is for Gold Ridge Farm, where Burbank grew his plants,” with a drawing of Burbank’s cottage, which my late father helped restore.  And on the page for “H is for homes,” our next door neighbors’ house gets a nice portrait.

Recommended for anyone with an interest in Sebastopol or attractive alphabet books!

S is for Sebastopol is available at Copperfield’s Books. A selection of Phil’s drawings can be found on his MySpace album.
