Nice shout-out for the Sonoma County Library’s maps and digital collections: sonoma_county_map

Curious about the history of your parcel or maybe how downtown Healdsburg was laid out back in the day? The Sonoma County Library has a vast collection of historic maps including township maps, plat maps, Sanborn maps and historical atlases.

A complete set of Sanborn Insurance Company maps can be found at the library on microfilm. These maps were originally created to calculate fire insurance risks in a community. Lauded by historians and preservationists alike, they are a vital component in identifying what was located where in great detail. [read full story]

 


I always enjoy seeing books with a personal connection, so I was pleased to see that my friend Ben Pease, of Pease Press, had created the winery map for Marty Olmstead’s California Directory of Fine Wines. I just cataloged the 3rd ed. for the Sonoma County Wine Library (a special collection at the Healdsburg Regional Library). Ben has produced many fine maps, both under his own imprint and under contract. He was the cartographer behind the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District’s attractive Sonoma County Parks, Recreational Lands & Open Spaces map and put together several maps for the my old trail group, the Trail Center, in Palo Alto, Calif.
