Wangari Maathai

Every year the volunteers at the Luther Burbank Experiment Farm plant a tree in Luther Burbank’s honor on Arbor Day.

On Sunday, March 4, at 2 pm, we’re planting the tree in honor of Wangari Maathai, the activist from Kenya who started the Green Belt Movement, which resulted in the planting of 30 million trees in Africa. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for many other human rights activities, and passed away last fall.

A relative of Ms. Maathai, Monicah Gacegu, a local nurse, will join us in her native dress to celebrate Wangari Maathai and Luther Burbank’s contributions to increasing the population of trees around the world.

NOTICE

Please park at St. Stephens Church, 500 Robinson Road, and walk up the stairs at the far end of the lot, through Heights & Orchards. Farm is at the top of the hill.

Modern-day Johnny Appleseed, Tim Womick will perform his TreeCircus for the kids at 3 pm. All ages of kids will gain a sense of the importance of the tree canopy’s shade on dropping the temperature around us.

Throughout the hour-long program, participants learn about trees, the value of trees, why we should plant more of them, and even learn how to climb them safely, like a pro.

Those who suddenly find themselves a part of the TreeCircus and in front of the audience, blossom (or continue to bloom) in their own right. Student participation is what it’s all about.

In addition to hosting a TreeCircus performance and tree planting, we will have anAsk the Arborist booth where members of the community can pick the brains of local Certified Arborists.

SCHEDULE
